Program of Intent

Assignment: Pushing and pulling the opening - Phase 1 - Creating the opening

The sun plays an important role in the human life. Even though we have equipped ourselves with ties and suitcases through the last centuries, it does not change the fact that we still are born with a daily rhythm. A rhythm which contains sleeping during the night and being awake during the day. Actually a pretty simple rhythm. Scientific studies show our physical recovery takes place between 22-02 and our mental recovery from 02-06. It is important to recover in that period. The fact that we have displaced that rhythm surprises me. I think that the average person gets up at 8 a.m. and goes to bed around midnight. According to that, I will design my envelope after the sun and the daily rhythm of the actions, by giving a huge amount of light through the day. I will make the sun force an occupant up in the morning and tell the occupant it is sleeping time in the evening by letting him see the sunset.

The rooms in the cube are designed for our daily rhythm so the actions which needs sunlight gets it. Off course I have considered more subjects than that; private/public, social/asocial, view, orientation, size, scale, atmosphere, comfort, what kind of light could best support the different actions, and most important of all: The body-room relationship. Based on these ideas, the rooms have been designed and carefully positioned in the envelope.

Create the Openings and the Spaces

Assignment: Pushing and pulling the Envelope - Phase I - Creating the opening

Basically the idea was to create openings in foam cubes. These openings were designed for different actions; sleeping, bathing, cooking, eating, working and relaxing. Every action was turned and twisted to understand its requirements according to the opening. Some of the terms considered were private/public, social/asocial, view, orientation, size, scale, atmosphere, comfort, what kind of light could best support the action, and most important of all: The body-room relationship. Basically the openings were seen as a frame in the first phase. A frame for further development in three different investigation phases later in the assignment.

The Adjustable View

Assignment: Recently Separated
Case Study: Arthur and Yvonne Boyd's Art Centre by Glenn Murcutt

For each bed the window is adjustable from an intimate scale to a more open scale. Its functions are adjusting the light, ventilation and most importing of all the framing of the view. Assuming the view was Arthur Boyd's muse, Glenn Murcutt decided to give each resident an individual view of the site.

Betragtningsvinkler

Assignment: Window Safari in Aarhus
